The Michigan State Waterways Commission is responsible for the acquisition, construction, and maintenance of recreational harbors, channels, docking and launching facilities, and administration of commercial docks in the Straits of Mackinac. This week the Michigan State Waterways Commission’s proposed a “kayak tax,” which would require all kayaks, canoes and paddle boards to be registered with the state. State Representative Shane Hernandez voted for a resolution opposing the kayak tax. Hernandez said,” people should not be penalized for supporting the state’s tourism industry, especially considering participation in paddle sports increases at a rate of 7 percent each year in Michigan.” The Michigan Legislature has passed resolutions against the registration fee and encouraged the commission to find other ways to improve recreational opportunities.
