Happy President’s Day! But what is President’s day and why is it celebrated? The federal holiday was originally established by Congress in 1885 to honor the first president’s birthday. George Washington’s birthday now known as President’s Day was first only a holiday for those who lived in Washington D.C. and then later was recognized by the rest of the country in the late 1960s. Today President’s Day honors all presidents and is held each year on the 3rd Monday in February.
