July 4th is a big holiday across the country as Americans celebrate Independence Day, but here in Port Huron, it was also a big celebration this year for one local church as Pilgrim Baptist Church celebrated its 100th birthday. Only July 4, 1919 the church was founded in the home of Curtis Caldwell with money donated by friends and well wishers to buy land to construct a building that was originally located at 1604 Riverview Street. In 1971, the church was relocated to 2623 10th Avenue where it remains today. In its 100 years, Alex Crittenden, the church’s current leader says there have been 17 pastors before him. Crittenden has been leading the church for more than 30 years now and says he looks forward to what is still to come.
