Smartphones, tablets, electric vehicles and more- the ever-changing world of electronics and technology is changing the way we use and think about electricity. As consumers, we’re growing more conscious not only of how we’re using electricity, but where it’s coming from. Did you know that the energy landscape is shifting from fossil fuels to more renewable energy sources such as wind and solar? Having the right infrastructure in place to connect these new sources will be critical. That’s why ITC, the nation’s largest electricity transmission company based in southeast Michigan, is working at the national, regional and state level to plan and construct transmission infrastructure that will enable this clean energy future. The company’s Thumb Loop Project, which extends from right here in St. Clair County up though Sanilac, Huron and Tuscola Counties, was designed and built to support system reliability and the maximum wind energy potential of the region. The project, which went into service in 2015 consists of 140 miles of transmission line and four substations, and has connected more than 1,000 megawatts of wind energy.
