The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office is advising local residents that a new scam is being attempted in our area. Residents and businesses are receiving calls claiming to be DTE customer service collecting payments, but police are saying it’s a scam. The Sheriff’s Office is reporting that last weekend a Port Huron Township business was contacted by phone. The owner of the business was told she was behind on payments and if she didn’t pay up, the power would be shut off. She was given an 833 phone number to verify the information and told deputies that when she called the number, it sounded very similar to the message she received when she called an actual DTE customer service number. Fortunately, she did not give the caller any credit card information. A spokesperson for DTE Energy’s Corporate Security, in light of this event, is reminding people that DTE never collects payments by contacting the customer over the phone or in person. If you are behind in payments, you will receive a shutoff notice in the mail that is red in color. You will then have approximately one week to get current on your bill. If you have any concerns about a possible scam involving DTE, you are asked to contact them directly at 1-800-477-4747. Try to give the DTE representative as much information about the attempted scam as possible. There has only been one report of this type of scam recently, but if you receive this type of call, immediately contact DTE. Never give your credit card or other financial information over the phone to a person who contacts you demanding payment.
