Boatnerds.com, the popular website for Great Lakes freighter-enthusiasts, has announced that the popular river-facing Port Huron webcam has returned. It is now streaming 24/7 from atop the city’s municipal building. The original camera went online in 2001 and was the most popular link on the BoatNerd links page with almost 750,000 clicks. Neil Schultheiss, a volunteer for the boat nerd project said, “the old camera was well past its planned life span when it failed last winter.” The camera was possible with the collaboration of the organization, Acheson Ventures and the City of Port Huron to replace the old camera with a new high definition model. Schultheiss said he hopes this is the first of many such cameras. They currently “have two Detroit locations in the works and just have to overcome the technical details of providing enough bandwidth for the HD image. Viewers can watch that channel on YouTube.
