Michigan has been significantly affected by the national opioid epidemic. The number of annual opioid-related overdose deaths in the state has more than tripled since 2011. Patients can now fill out a state form that directs health professionals and emergency medical services personnel to not administer opioids to them. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services made the nonopioid directive form available to the public on its website in response to a new state law.
