The administration of Fort Gratiot Township has had quite a shake in leadership this year and it’s not likely to stop in the near future. That’s after Robert Crawford, current township clerk submitted a letter of interest for the open Supervisor position this week. Crawford was one of two applicants who initially submitted letters of interest that were due earlier this week on Wednesday. The second applicant, however, withdrew interest after realizing a possible conflict of interest, leaving Crawford as the only standing letter of interest that will go before the Board of Trustees tonight at 6:00 p.m. The Board of Trustees will discuss the topic this evening and then are expected to take a vote. In the case of a majority vote of approval, Crawford will be appointed by the Board of Trustees as the next Fort Gratiot Township Supervisor. Crawford will need to take the oath of office in 45 days. If Crawford is appointed, this will leave the Fort Gratiot Township Clerk position open. Unlike, the Supervisor position, the day to day operations of the township cannot continue without a clerk. Upon the possible appointment of Crawford to the Supervisor position, it is likely the Board of Trustees will initiate the same process as the Supervisor position-starting with letters of interest and then a special board meeting to review applications. If either position is not filled within 45 days of vacancy, the process is turned over to St. Clair County for a special election. Crawford said, “this is a new chapter of township government that I would love to move into.” He’s “been a trustee, clerk and now the possibility of Supervisor is there” and he states, “it would be an honor to serve the residents of Fort Gratiot in this capacity.”
