Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of slavery’s end in the United States. This year at the Port Huron Museum the celebration will take place on Saturday, June 15 at 4:00 pm at the Port Huron Carnegie Museum. The national observance of African American Emancipation Day began in Galveston, Texas in 1865. The Port Huron’s Branch of the NAACP President Kevin Watkins said “Juneteenth is a day to honor and celebrate African American heritage and reflect upon the sacrifices made for the freedoms and liberties that all Americans enjoy today. Juneteenth 2019 is one of special historical significance. It marks the 400th year anniversary of the first African people’s reaching the shores of the Americas to be enslaved.”
