More than 10,000 people are hospitalized across the state of Michigan each year due to a traumatic brain injury. To help raise awareness of these often-preventable injuries, September has been declared TBI Awareness Month by Governor Rick Snyder. A TBI is any injury that occurs to the brain. It is caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. Although not all blows or jolts to the head result in a Traumatic Brain Injury. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is urging Michiganders to learn about injury prevention strategies to keep themselves and their families safe. Some safety tips include…wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle, bicycle or skates, playing a contact sport, and while skiing or snowboarding. Make sure living spaces are safe such as using non-slip mats or rugs and improve lighting in and around the home. For more information on TBI visit cdc.gov/traumaticbraininjury
